Dear Parents and Guardians:
Welcome to Special Academic Instruction Mathematics, Periods 1, 2 and 3!
Class Structure:
Due to the nature of the mathematics intervention classroom, including a variety of social grade levels and student IEP-based math goals, curriculum and concepts vary. The spring semester focus includes, but not limited to:
- Grade 6: Order of Operations/Exponents
- Grade 7: Integers
- Classwork/Homework is 25% of the student's grade.
- Participation is 25% of the student's grade.
- Tests/quizzes are 50% of the student's grade.
Homework consists of math concepts learned/reviewed and conveniently integrated into the class setting. Homework is graded according to student's positive effort in completion and accuracy to the best of their ability.
Your child is encouraged to practice fundamental operations skills online at Dream Box. They have full district-sponsored student access by using their log-in credentials through Clever anytime from home or school. However, 5 completed lessons per week are required in all math classes. Your child is given 20 minutes per class to access and work on Dream Box, and is graded for their participation. Dream Box is graded as follows based on the number of lessons completed per week:
-5 or more lessons= 100%;
-4 lessons= 80%;
-3 lessons= 60%; and
-2 or less lessons completed= 59% (Fail).
Please keep in mind, students can reasonably complete 5 lessons in the classroom if they are dedicated in their focus. Additionally, because Dream Box is geared to regulate/adjust to each student's skills level, the student must be the only person accessing their lessons. Outside support will regulate to the skill level of the individual assisting the student. Please refrain from giving support and instead encourage your child to do their best.
If your child is having difficulty with math concepts, "please" remind them to speak with me. I am available during Lunch/Advisory to provide additional support. Thank you for encouraging your daughter/son to reach out.
Respectfully... "Ms. Joy!"
It is not what you do for your children, but what you have taught them to do for themselves, that will make them successful human beings. -Ann Landers
